There exists considerable variation in form of the sepals among the [[flowering plant]]s. Often the sepals are much reduced, appearing somewhat awn-like, or as scales, teeth, or ridges. Examples of flowers with much reduced perianths are found among the [[Poaceae|grasses]]. In some flowers, the sepals are fused towards the base, forming a ''calyx tube'' (as in the [[Lythraceae]] family,<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.botany.hawaii.edu/FACULTY/CARR/lythr.htm|title=''Lythraceae''|last=Carr|first=Gerald|publisher=University of Hawaii|accessdate=2008-12-20}}</ref>) a ''floral tube'' that can include the petals and the attachment point of the [[stamen]]s.
